Materializing from the Warp comes our third Daemon Primarch: Magnus the Red. Chaos has long stood as one of the most dominant psychic factions in the game, and now, they have a Supreme Commander ready to push this even further.

Magnus is the second Warlord to use the Token system, following in the footsteps of Morvenn Vahl. While his rules introduce some added complexity, they’re ultimately straightforward to break down:

  • Each time a friendly card makes a Psychic attack, you gain a Cabal Token.
  • Your Psychic attacks are increased by 20% per Cabal Token you have.
  • In addition, when making a Psychic attack, there is a 10% chance per Cabal Token of triggering a Psychic Overload.
  • When a Psychic Overload occurs, double the Cabal Token attack bonus, but then lose half (rounded down) of your current Cabal Tokens.
  • The attacking card loses 10% of its starting Wounds per Cabal Token lost in this way.
  • Magnus is immune to damage dealt in this way.

In short, this means all Psychic attacks benefit from at least a +20% bonus, but they can spike up to a massive +400% at the top end.

This gradual ramp-up, combined with potential burst damage from Psychic Overload, means that most Psychic attacks will enjoy a consistent 60–120% damage increase by midgame.

Due to the Overload mechanic, the maximum recoil damage a friendly card can suffer is 50% of its base Wounds, in exchange for unleashing an attack at up to 400% damage.

Notably, both Warp Surge and Psionic Blast count as Psychic attacks. This means, with the right deck, Cabal Token generation can be both quick and consistent.

Magnus himself features Psionic Blast as a trait, giving him two opportunities each turn to trigger a Psychic Overload. Since he’s immune to the recoil damage, he easily stands out as the most devastating psyker in the game.

To prove the point: at max stats, Magnus has 160 Psychic attack. With his full Inspiring Presence buff, that rises to 208. Add in the full Cabal bonus and you’re looking at 250 damage from his Psionic Blast—or an explosive 832 direct damage, on a maximum Psychic Overload trigger.

Much like Angron’s synergy with Melee traits and the broader Chaos toolkit, Magnus is perfectly positioned to maximize the Chaos psychic roster, supported by a wide selection of Psionic Blast and Warp Surge cards.

Overall, this release should elevate an already popular archetype into an even more competitive and dynamic position. We’re excited to see the Warp-fueled strategies you’ll unleash – in the name of Tzeentch!
