Citizens, Warhammer 40,000 is truly a setting full of villains and heroes, of characters of standalone bearing and impact. None embody this more than the Primarch of the First Legion, the Dark Angels, Lion El’Jonson.

The Lion will be available to play as and against in time-limited live events starting this week, and we can’t wait for you to sink your teeth into what we have planned.

As with Guilliman, Skarbrand and Szarekh before him, The Lion will not be available for players to own in their collections at this moment. Instead, for now, he is reserved for the grandest of conflicts, and the biggest of live events. This is suitable for a being of such power, as not only does his card boast some incredibly impressive stats, but his Warlord Rule stands apart from those of “regular” Warlords.

With this rule we wanted the idea of the Lion being an incredibly powerful duelist to come to the fore. A true master of melee combat, we knew we wanted the rule to revolve around the idea of being faster, stronger, and cleverer than the opponent, in raw terms. However, we also were concerned about making a rule that focused entirely on The Lion as a card. So, we’ve applied the idea of fighting first to the entire deck.

The second part of the rule revolves around the idea of bodyguards. The Inner Circle of the Dark Angels is a prestigious brotherhood of veterans and champions of the chapter. Wherever The Lion goes, you can be sure that members of the Inner Circle will be with him, ready to die at a moment’s notice to save their Primarch.

When combined, these two rules make The Lion an incredibly formidable opponent to duel with another Warlord. Not only will one of his bodyguards attack you for attacking him, but he will also strike first. When taking a look at his card stats, it should be obvious that opting for Melee against a character like The Lion is not the most advisable move.

Finally, we can touch on The Lion’s traits. As the current bearer of the Emperor’s Shield, Shield was the obvious choice. This further enhances The Lion’s ability to duel and deal damage personally on the battlefield, something that the character relishes the opportunity to do.

Taking down The Lion will be your next challenge, as after playing as him in the first event next week, you’ll be given the reins of the more nefarious factions in the game, and asked to take him on headfirst. What strategies might you employ when fighting a card of The Lion’s stature?
