While it has been many years since Perturabo has been seen in real-space, the Iron Warriors have been in a constant state of activity, brutalising their foes, and bringing the most intimidating of daemon engines to bear. Among them few have been more active in recent times than the new up and comer, Warsmith Kravek Morne.

Bringing an Iron Warriors Warlord into the game gives some much needed love for an under-represented faction, while also being the perfect opportunity to plug a gap in the current Chaos roster: a dedicated ranged Warlord.

The Iron Warriors encapsulate both determined resilience in the face of the foe, and overwhelming firepower that leaves nothing but rubble and ashes on the battlefield and Kravek combines both of these elements together with his rule Contempt for the Weak.

Warlord Rule

If a friendly card has more remaining Wounds than the card opposite, increase its Ranged attack by +40%. At the start of each turn, if a friendly card has higher Ranged attack than the card opposite, it takes 40% less damage.”

Master the Warlord Rule

This rule breaks into two synergistic parts. Firstly, while your cards have higher Wounds than the card opposite them, they increase they’re Ranged attack. Importantly this is based on current Wounds, so defensive traits like Shields, Regeneration and Medicae are all at a premium here. Obviously this is a continuous state of battlefield management, just as you would expect from Perturabo’s sons, and the concept of “Wounds matter” rules is also something very underutilized in the Warlord ruleset making this a great area to explore further.

Secondly, at the start of each turn, if your Ranged attack is higher than the card opposite, that card takes 40% less damage. The timing with “at the start of each turn” means that should something happen mid combat to affect your Ranged attack, such as card with Inspiring Presence be killed, you will keep the protection until next turn, meaning you can commit to attacks with much more certainty, again in true Iron Warriors style each engagement happens with as close to perfect information as possible.

Finally the way these two interact have obvious synergy, having higher wounds means higher ranged, and higher ranged means less damage taken, allowing you to keep hold of your ranged buff for longer. Obviously it can all quickly fall apart if your cards show weakness and rightly so, because there is no room to falter in the ranks of the Iron Warriors. Finally of note, is yes, if your opponent does not have a Ranged attack, you immediately have more Ranged than them and will get the damage reduction effect. But that’s their fault for bringing a knife to a gun fight…

Kravek should bring an huge boost to large amount of the underutilized Ranged roster for Chaos and allows for somewhat flexible build options where you can emphasise Ranged or Wounds, and still get significant benefit. Chaos are also in a great position to do both with plenty of options for massive ranged damage on massive bodies!

All that’s left to say is “Iron Within, Iron Without”, and give them a reason to fear your onslaught!
