With pick-hammer in hand Berekh leads his Kin into battle at the head of his Beserks, Berehk’s Breakers. As a leader of the Cthonians, and a formidable melee combatant he arrives as the first attack specific Warlord for the Votann.
Berehk embodies the Votann’s resilience and refusal to go down, or at least to go down swinging! His rule focuses on being most dangerous when backed into a corner and interrupting the opponent’s flow.
Warlord Rule
Break the Foe
“Whenever a friendly card would be destroyed by an enemy attack, it first makes a Melee attack against the attacking card for 60% of its Melee attack value (up to a maximum of 1 time(s) per turn).”
Mastering the Rule
So in simple terms the first time a friendly card would be killed each turn it gets to make a free attack against the card attacking it. This means dealing lethal damage on any of Berehk’s cards is risky indeed. This free attack is an interrupt attack, so if the opponent’s attacking card is killed, then their attack doesn’t trigger and the damage is prevented!
This also triggers off traits or warlord rules that are classed as attacks; a Psionic Blast card set up to kill two cards at the start of turn may just find itself getting clobbered before it has the chance to have any sorcerous words leave their lips! This also means that taking out Berehk himself comes at the cost of him getting a free hit in.
However, it’s not all upside. Cards that would be killed by damage that is not attack have no opportunity to attack, and will go down just like any other card. More often however the fact that it’s limited to once per turn is where the biggest opportunity window will be. Target Acquired, area of effect attacks, just good old 2v1 will leave Berehk’s cards overwhelmed and exposed on the second attack with no window to strike back.
All in all it’s definitely a potent rule! Free attacks that can potentially save you is a double whammy, after all they do say a good offense is the best defence!
Also worth noting is that Berehk now comes in as the Votann’s first Rare Warlord meaning that every faction now has at least one Rare warlord, and is our first lower rarity warlord in some time! This should also help round out the roster and help broaden the options for Votann in general. He’s also 33pts which gives him a decent stat line, making him very dangerous to a lot of the lower cost Warlords, and he has the trait Big Game Hunter which means even when facing off against the largest enemy Warlords he’s going to be a real risk to take head on!
With that, get out there and break some heads and make sure you go down swinging!
