The Twin Lance, Scatterflare and Sunsear, touch down into Combat Cards! The dynamic pair encapsulates the battle theory of Mont’ka: getting close to your opponent and overwhelming them with intense short-range firepower. Their special rule also represents this where the best strategy is to go on the offensive and expose your key pieces for maximum pay off.
The Twin Lance posed an interesting challenge on how to do two Warlords in one.
We approached this by using the existing token mechanic, but added a few new elements as well as taking the opportunity to revisit and improve tokens as a whole.
We’ve also added another new key mechanic that can help a number of existing Warlords: allowing the Warlord to be deployed early. We will be looking to apply this to others in the future, but for now it’s just for The Twin Lance.
Warlord Rule
“Increase the base Ranged attack of all friendly cards by 15%.
While Shas’ri Locai is deployed, when an opponent is destroyed by a Ranged attack, 100% of excess damage is passed onto an adjacent card.
While Shas’ri Lantar is deployed, increase the base Ranged attack of all friendly cards by a further 15%.
Shas’ri Lantar is added to the deck as a token.
Shas’ri Locai is not restricted to being drawn last.”
Master the Warlord Rule
So, there’s a lot to go over here, as can be expected for a two in one Warlord package.
Firstly, all Ranged attacks are increased by 15% at a base level. This is always on, and applies to all friendly cards.
Next when Shas’ri Locai [Scatterflare] is deployed, Ranged attacks deal overflow damage, just like the existing rule for Logan Grimnar. This means that every point of excess damage is passed on to an adjacent enemy card.
Finally when Shas’ri Lantar [Sunsear] is deployed, Ranged attacks are increased by a further 15%. This stacks with the base bonus, increasing all Ranged attacks a total of 30% while they are on the field.
When both are deployed, all Ranged attacks are increased by 30% and all excess damage spills over to an adjacent enemy card, which is a terrifying combo!
Warlord Tokens
There are two further lines here that also make an important difference.
Sunsear is a Token. That means they don’t appear in deck building or in the collection, and is added to the deck when a game starts, and then can be drawn as a normal bodyguard.
Just like other existing Tokens they share a level tree with the Warlord, in this case Scatterflare. In simple terms upgrading Scatterflare upgrades Sunsear, and so there’s only one set of cards to collect for the both of them.
Additionally as Sunsear is a Token, the game does not end when they are destroyed. The match only ends when Scatterflare is destroyed.
With the Token being such a focus of the rules, we’ve made a big quality of life improvement to Token Warlords in general, and now the attached Token can be inspected at any time by opening the Warlord rule, both in battle and in the Collection screen.
This has also been applied to the existing token Warlords: Nemesor Zahndrekh, The Silent King and the Tervigon.
Token chamge sounds interesting. Will shake things up a bit and make them more playable. 🙂
A quite powerful rule. Much more than the lion’s, which is a copy of the mask, check that out, it’s the weakest warlord. Update Acheran
Fantastic interesting original design. I think both warlords having shield is way too powerful though.
