Greeting Citizens!

Who brings this year’s spooky season to a better crescendo than the last of our daemon Primarchs – Mortation!

Mortarion is as expected the ultimate attrition Warlord, wearing down the enemy forces while also healing your own forces.

Special Rule: Host of Plagues

His rule Host of Plagues reads as follows:

At the end of your turn, each enemy card loses 20 Wounds. This is increased to 40 Wounds when Mortarion is on the field. Additionally if an enemy card is destroyed by this effect, all friendly cards heal for 20% of the destroyed card’s base Wounds.

The main focus of the rule here is a damage over time effect. 20 damage to all opponent cards at the end of each turn is a decent amount of damage and can easily catch, or chip down already wounded cards. This however goes from chip damage to a significant amount of persistent damage the second Mortarion hits the field. This follows a good Chaos precedent of wanting to have your Warlord lead from the front and with both Fear and Regeneration, and a triple attack stat line, he’s fully kitted up to do exactly that.

As well as the strong damage over time, whenever an enemy card is destroyed by this effect, all of your cards on the board are healed by 20% of the destroyed card’s base Wounds. This means the bigger the card this rule takes down the more significant amount of healing your cards will get. This all adds to Mortarion’s durability and ability to lead from the front. While getting this to trigger consistently will be very hard to do, when it does, it will be a significant swing in board presence for you.

As will all of these direct damage effects will push through protective effects like fear and shields and means that other tanky stall decks we definitely struggle to out endure Mortarion. Add in a healthy amount of the abundant AoE poison effects that Nurgle have the enemy lines will quickly crumble regardless of the defense they have.

Mortarion can play into both an aggressive or passive playstyle and still come out on top so there should be plenty of options for creative builds to showcase Nurgle’s eternal love! I hope to see you all spreading the blessings this Season!
